This Book Won’t Let You Read The Next Page Until You Solve The Puzzle!

Our world becomes more and more virtual every day. We stare at screens constantly and interact with life through a keyboard or touchscreen. Our leisure activities also take place in the digital realm. Even the books we read are just more words on a screen.

This may not have been the problem that Industrial Designer Brady Whitney set out to solve, but in offering us a puzzle of his own design, he gives us the opportunity to interact with our entertainment in the real world once more.

For a research product, Brady knew that he wanted to explore new markets in the toy and game genre. A fan of puzzles himself, he noticed that this market was divided into low quality, affordable puzzles that were often discarded after one use, and high quality, elaborate puzzles that were usually too expensive for most people to enjoy.

What he came up with? Epic!

Aiming to bridge that gap, Brady came up with the idea for what he calls the Codex Silenda.

The Codex Silenda is a puzzle book that is created out of real wood using a laser-cutter. It is beautifully and intricately crafted to be not only a puzzle, but to share a story as well. As the user solves each puzzle, using their hands as well as their brains, a new page is unlocked where a piece of a story is told.

In this case, the story is about an apprentice of Da Vinci’s that must solve the puzzle before he is caught in a trap meant for would-be spies.
